Karen Fried teaching
Karen Fried is an experienced music teacher specializing in various ages and genres. She worked extensively with early childhood students, teaching Jewish Music, and also has taught private voice and piano lessons. She plays the ukulele when teaching young children and caters every private lesson to the individual student. Karen understands that every student learns differently and she strives to empower her students and allow them to follow their own path. As a private teacher, Karen’s teaching philosophy is to build off a solid understanding of technique to ensure each student has a strong structure and the confidence to take music with them anywhere. As a group teacher, she is always looking for innovative ways to make music learning fun and easy to understand. She wrote a song that teaches children to differentiate the major and minor modes while learning how to say “good morning” and “good night” in Hebrew. You can find a recording of the song on the Media Page.

Karen started teaching in 2013 in a classroom setting, as a Hebrew School teacher at the Boston Synagogue. She worked with young children and taught them to be creative and open-minded. In 2015, she created a Music for Tots program at the Boston Synagogue which was the first of its kind, bringing music to families and their toddlers. She went on to teach music at the Silverstein Hebrew Academy, for the Pre-School Division.

Karen began teaching private voice lessons while she was pursuing her Master's degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She was in an outreach program called Conservatory in the Schools, where she taught voice lessons at a local high school. She also studied Vocal Pedagogy and Physiology at the Conservatory, where she developed a vast knowledge of how the voice works. She has privately taught ages ranging from six to adult, and loves working with all levels. Karen also teaches beginner piano and welcomes young musicians just beginning to play. She currently has students throughout the world.

Karen is enthusiastic about making music learning fun and stress-free. She wants all her students to learn the music and songs they are most passionate about and  encourages them to explore new styles.

I took voice lessons with Karen for two years through a school program. Under her care, my voice transformed. My range and technique improved dramatically and I became more confident singing by myself. Karen has an extensive background in vocal theory and performance and taught me a lot about how singing works anatomically. She is a kind and attentive teacher. I learned so much and I offer my highest recommendation on her behalf.

I had worked with Karen for two years and my improvement was not only noted by me but other people as well! Along with improving/ understanding my tone and range, she helped me gain confidence in myself and singing in front of others. Our sessions were always positive and something for me to look forward to and the exercises she's shown me have stuck with me for good! — Allison
